Wind Damage Caravan Container Garden
Thanks Ivan, it rained here at lunch time then it's been glorious since, if the weather people have got it right (for a change) it's supposed to be sunny here tomorrow so I can get some gardening done. Have a great week. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Very very strange year heat we are getting and some scatter showers sometimes, hurricane, tropical storms but I’m catching my rain water, take care of yourself and the garden it’s beautiful.
Put wind breakers around your van
My broad beans are cropping really well, even though they're being blown every which way, and so are my peas. Not even any blackfly on the broad beans (I think they'd get blown off anyway!) but I'll grow dwarf ones next year, the aquadulce are like a 6ft jungle to fight through to pick! I've already had some nice spuds (Charlotte) from two pots; from one spud in one pot I get about three or four meal's worth of potatoes if I'm not greedy, two or three if I am! French and runner beans are really struggling badly and Little Gem squash is NOT HAPPY. Rhubarb looks great, but it's its first year, planted from a wee bit of semi- mouldy root which I nursed back to life in the new year, so I won't harvest anything from it this year. Onions have hardly grown at all after a decent start under a cheap plastic cloche from Aldi. I have carrots in a deep trough, raised up (hopefully) above carrot fly level. They were VERY slow to get going, even though I planted pre-germinated seed, but I had a dig around with my fingers and the roots seem to be plumping up nicely. I've kept as many of my tomatoes as possible indoors and quite a few have set fruit already; none of the outdoor toms have set any fruit yet even though they're against a south-south-east facing wall and quite sheltered from the wind. Fingers crossed. I'm getting a touch of sun on my raised bed where I grow the veggies, most afternoons and evening. It's not much, but seems to help a bit. Better than none, at any rate. One thing I am sick of is garlic spraying against slugs every. single. evening. If I miss an evening they run WILD. I'm sure that at 2am it must be like the Last Chance Slug Saloon out there, wild partying, s*x all over the place, gorging themselves silly ... I am investing in nematodes and awaiting their arrival soon. SOMETHING has to be done to reduce the population!
Not felt great, think its covid but planted my rooster spuds.hope they grow. Yes been awfull here in Lancashire.xx
The bugs have eaten all my lettuce and beets and cleaned off the potato tops. Frustrating
Geo engineering! Thanks for the video Ivan.
Hello, Ivan, I've commented before as I'm in Lincolnshire for over 30 years and enjoy my gardening. Fistly it is a windy area but the last 2 or 3 years have been particularly bad. As far as the rain goes that too is worse than normal. Statistically Lincolnshire is one of the driest and warmest areas of the UK in summertime believe it or not. Getting your head around the wind is the key to success and growing what tolerates it. I've long given up on taller stuff, sunflowers, cordon tomatoes, runner beans etc frothy hanging baskets. Believe it or not I find arid ornamentals...agaves, yuccas, hardy palms, cordylines etc do quite well in a sheltered sunny spot. Anyway, good luck with the caravan and growing from just outside Louth inland from you.
We're having the usual "all four seasons in one day" here. My grasses and ferns are thriving, my tomatoes haven't even produced a flower.
Shame about the wind Ivan but it comes with the territory. The coastal strip of Lincolnshire is a very exposed area and in the Winter the wind becomes more than a nuisance , it can be dangerous. I live about 5 miles inland from the sea but the wind is still a problem but the only upside for you right on the coast is that air frosts are not usually severe or common even though that doesn't mean it's warm! Obviously I don't know your exact location and if I did I would not reveal it but further up the coast at Humberston and Cleethorpes storm damage and tidal surges are always a worry so keep any insurance you have up to date. Anyway, good luck and enjoy the sea air!!
This is my first year on my allotment and I’m so sick of this weather nothing is striving I had such big hopes but there slowly dwindling 😢
Thanks for the encouragement Ivan, as a first time grower I'm pleased with the 1lb Rocket potatoes I took out the other day, gave me hope there's more in the other pots. Like everyone else will have to wait and see about the other things I'm trying in containers.
It’s horrendous isn’t it! Seems like this rain is in for the week but looks like the week after it might be starting to improve again 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Put a string fence around my main crop potatoes yesterday. Here in the Midlands it's been on off heavy showers then bit of sun and repeat. It's ridiculous.
Is there no way you can erect a wind break of some sort.? My heating has been on all week in the evening-most folk are the same 😡
Geo engineering
Yep, I reckon I'd be saving about fourpence on lettuces and spending forty quid drying out any clothes I use for gardening. So I'm stopping indoors and letting my garden (mostly in pots) go wild. Not that I've seen any butterflies to make use of it. Ho hum. Here's to planning for next year. 🌞 🌧🌞🌪
It was really wet last summer but I don't think it was as cold and windy as it has been this year. I have an allotment and we've got some new plot holders and I can understand them feeling a bit hacked off at the moment.
Ivan the weather is not natural because of the weather modification chemicals being sprayed into the atmosphere by jet planes.
Its been so cold in kent noe we got heavy showers, saw a video allotment gardener who is experiencing problems with not growing or fruiting. He put cloches, and plastic domes on his veg they started to grow again he also said they protect against chem rain.
Google geo engineering you will find the answer
That constant cold wind coming across my small garden from the west (even on bright days) has devastated my veggies and flowers. They are just not growing!!!! One minute it is cloudy and cold - say 13 degrees and then full sun up to 23 degrees. My plants are suffering badly 😢😢😢
Ivan I'm bloody fed up with it, i thought last year was bad but come on it's July for goodness sake, some of my plants are struggling. Their slow this year & i feel like I'm so behind but I'm not it's the daft weather. Having said that i had my first harvest of new potatoes today, 3.45lb, I'm happy with that. Apparently we've got rain all day Tuesday 😕 Have a nice day out tomorrow....
Weather is much the same here in Brittany Ivan. Wind nearly every day but not so much rain but not warm either. Everything in garden is all behind. Thanks for the videos. We can see that we are not alone with this weather.
The weather is terrible here to Ivan. My Florence onions have all cone through now, can I grow them where they are or do I have to transplant. Thanks Ivan
Ivan it would be interesting to hear you and your viewers thoughts about bee decline this year? In our village we have noted a big decline in our gardens.
I’ve barely seen any, the same with butterflies 🙁
Hi Bessie. I think it may be to do with the geo engineering. I have not seen a single bee or butterfly in my garden. @Bessie66
not seen many myself this year yet despite all the inviting flowers I have grown but lots of those asian lady birds on my broad beans that were covered in black fly for a while
Cheers Ivan
ah you must have got the rain we got last night, sounded crazy.. also seasons? what is a season anymore? I feel like we have no seasons anymore but the same thing everyday with the odd sunny spell later on in the day, seems the weather is just melding into one these days.... but hey ho chin up and hopefully we keep getting some harvests.
That's a really good harvest from 1 container that's really good. iv not tried 'rocket' before, we def going to give them a go next yr. We always grow our new potato's fr supermarket ones, the tiny baby ones & they grow really well for us every yr in a lidl potato tower l bought for £11 about 4 yrs ago. We paid 57p for a l kg bag of tiny new potatoes when on sale & planted them all in the 4 layer tower. We were really late planting them this yr so their not yet ready , but l had a little rummage in the top tier & baby spuds are there :) From past harvests we should get approx 12 kg back. l recommend anyone to grow their own new potato's, it's so easy & all organic. We like yr tip to replant.. we have just planted a few more supermarket ones in tubs today to see if they will give me another harvest before winter, hope it works.
Every week im learning so much from you Ivan. Your an inspiration. My container veges are doing really well. The calcuim tip for tomatoes and peppers is something iv never heard of. I shall be using this advice. Your caravan potting area looks stunning.😊
thank you so much for saving me loads of money on expensive lamps to over winter my peppers. I didnt have a clue you could use daylight bulbs. Wow i have learned so much from you in a couple of hours, what i never learned from watching 50+ videoes of other creators. Its 3.38am and i cannot stop watching. I wish i had found you in march.
oh my god i am so jealous of your garden. i have 2 cats and 2 big shed and aviary set ups for my rabbits so i only have room for two slim green houses. I love the container garden and thats now what ive decided to do when i move them out of the green houses.
i love how real you are and no frills. I'm a beginner and feel swamped watching other youtubers who use "special" everything. I also saved my bell pepper seeds and they have grown into big plants and wanted to know about pinching the tops off to create branching to get more peppers. I'm now a new subscriber from st helens. Its hard to find people growing bell peppers in england so thankyou very much.
How do you control pests? Ive grown 5 cabbage in my greenhouse but theyve had a really bad infestation of aphids. My first year growing anything Thanks
Hi Ivan. Would you mind telling me the name of the mini cucumber please?
Is that Kerrs pink potato the old Scottish, if so they are not so resistant to blight =? i am growing some kerrs pink this year here in Northern Norway
it spread to tomato and peppers as well.. and now a new more resistant blight is discovered and not so treatable. big farmers spray against blight 5 times each season
Very good weight of your potatoes Ivan. Your peppers are coming in well, mine are only flowering.
I would love to grow potatoes but I want to no if I could put them in the ground without any shooters would they sprout in the soil, we had a hurricane Beryl pass through our country on Monday and then a rain storm on Wednesday but we were safe and also my garden lots of wind, be safe
I have been on a learning curve and next year I will only pit one potato to each container.
Lots of lovely air fryer chips and some spuds for slow cooker scouse as well ! Fab harvest from one little spud !
Great stuff Ivan, potatoes looking good 👍👍
Hi I wAm interested in what you will do with the remaining potato compost. You said dry it out and reuse it. Will that be completely or would you have to mix it with fresh compost to grown more veg. Also interested how you will use some of the potatoes for another crop. How will you do that. Could you do it with a supermarket potato? Thank you. I am learning 😊
Beautiful potatoes ❤ Ivan I have Maris piper in containers. The leaves appear to be dying back - when will be the best time to dig these up?
Oh I didn’t know that you could do that with the tatties that you’ve grown yourself Im definitely going to have a go thanks Ivan
Thanks Ivan, it's all looking great and another lovely harvest of spuds. I hope that you do well with your own seed potatoes also, that'll mean that your original ones cost nothing. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Wow so cool I love the videos you share thankyou ❤
gorgeous potatoes.
Great potato haul Ivan. I've had broad beans and peas this week, and emptied two containers of potatoes, but its been raining and blowing strong winds all week and its cold. Not much of a summer over here and pretty rotten for the strawberries I was looking forward to. They are ripening one a week 😂. ❤ from 🇮🇪
it's amazing how your have big peppers on your outside growing pepper plants and I have tiny ones in my greenhouse. I guess it could be a variety thing IDK XD. Still great job it's looking great!
